Krikzz Announces Mega Everdrive Core

Krikzz, the developer responsible for the Everdrive brand of flash-carts, has announced a new model of Everdrive for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis: The Mega Everdrive Core. Pitched as a budget friendly cart, the Mega Everdrive Core loses the MegaCD/SegaCD functionality of the Pro model but also costs half as much—coming in at roughly $100USD. There are a few other differences, which Krikzz outlined in a spreadsheet style infographic, but if you’re just interested in 32X, Mega Drive/Genesis, and Master System games then this cart seems like a great value.

A chart that compares Krikzz’s three most feature rich Mega Drive/Genesis Everdrives. Note that while the MEDCore supports MD+, it does not support MSU-MD—likely owing to the fact that MSU-MD requires some kind of real or emulated MegaCD/SegaCD hardware to function.

The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis may have more commercially available flash carts than any other retro game console I know of, and they all have slightly different feature sets. In order from least capable to most capable, the list currently looks like this:

It’s a bit of a task to outline what all the differences are and which cart is appropriate for every use case and budget but with so many models available, fans of Sega’s pre-Saturn library will surely be able to find one that fits them just right.
