Sega Genesis / Mega Drive

The Sega Genesis / Megadrive versions 1, 2 and CDX require no modification to get RGB output. The Genesis 3’s can output RGB, but some require a modification. I strongly recommend you read this entire section, so you can find exactly what’s the best for your needs.

Genesis 1 Stereo Audio Mod

This page shows you an easy way to get stereo audio from your Genesis 1, without using the front headphone jack.  Installing a “Triple Bypass” or a Mega Amp would be an overall better solution, but if you have early edition Model 1’s, this would be a very easy way to accomplish stereo audio.

Summary / Tips:

There have been so many amazing enhancements made available for the Genesis / Mega Drive in the past few years.  We went from having a few complicated options to some GREAT ones!  Based on all the great updates, here’s what I suggest for Genesis consoles:

– All Genesis systems output good quality RGB video, but are plagued with jailbars.  If you’re looking for the best quality, plan on doing at least one hardware modification.  If you’d like, here’s some no-mod tips:  https://youtu.be/UaPs4VGG-Po

– Genesis 1 owners can get a quick video improvement by simply lifting the subcarrier pin on the VDP.  This disables composite video, but greatly reduces the jailbars.

– It’s my strong opinion that all Genesis 2 and 3 owners should install a “triple bypass” board, that bypasses both the audio and video circuits.  In many cases, this disables composite video (depends on motherboard revision), but the improvement is huge.  I also feel all Genesis 1 owners should consider this as well;  The audio improvement isn’t as big and you’ll still have some interference, but you’ll be able to utilize a Genesis 2 style DIN and there’s a definite overall improvement.
