PSUnoRetro Interest Check: Bluetooth Controllers on PS1 & 2

Will’s Console Mods has recently starting selling a controller adapter for PlayStation 1 & 2 consoles that lets you connect modern Bluetooth controllers.  The price is about $35 plus shipping.  Orders aren’t currently open, but you can fill out an interest check form to be notified when they’re available:

While you can choose from a variety of controllers, I think people will be most excited to use PS4/5 controllers with their classic PlayStation consoles, with *less than half a frame of latency!!!  That should be considered “pretty much zero” in almost all scenario’s involving the PS1&2 using a controller, so this is an excellent choice for people who want a solid wireless option.

Another cool feature is the ability to emulate multi-tap functionality:  If this feature is enabled in the config page, you can connect multiple bluetooth controllers to a single receiver and use it with games that are multi-tap compatible.  As a note, you can’t use this to connect a second controller to standard 2p games – You’ll need a second PSUnoRetro for that.  I think this would certainly be a cool way to play NBA Jam though!

This controller adapter was made possible via the BlueRetro platform designed by Darthcloud.  Firmware updates and button mappings can be performed over bluetooth via Windows software or Android phones.  If you run into any issues, you can use a cheap USB programmer to manually perform firmware updates, but it’s not needed.

*Here’s the latency results from the BlueRetro platform’s testing.  I’m looking forward to verifying these numbers, but they seem legit:

PS4/PS5: ~5.4 ms
XBOX One: ~8.8 ms
Switch Pro: ~12.4 ms
PS3: ~12.8
WiiU Pro: ~13.2 ms
8bitdo: ~16.2 ms
Wiimote: ~16.3 ms
