Double Dragon II NES to SNES

Developer Rumbleminze recently released another NES to SNES conversion, this time for the game Double Dragon II.  The “A” button will act as if you pressed both Y and B, effectively acting as a jump button.  Also, in the original game, you had to put in a code on the game over screen, and the code changed every 3 levels or so, to be able to continue – This is no longer the case, so you can always continue if you game over.  There’s also an MSU-1 version of the soundtrack along with the original, which uses Membler’s 2A03 emulator for audio.  More info after the links:

Here’s some more Quality Of Life options that Rumbleminze added as options:

  • The continue code is not required to continue
  • The game can be completed on all difficulty levels
  • The title screen palettes have been updated (which feels like a bug in the original game to me)
  • If you need some help, feel free to pause the game and ask Lance and Bill for some extra lives.

Like with Rumbleminze’s previous NES to SNES conversions, this is utilizing FastROM/HiROM to further speed up the data transfer.  That, combined with the SNES’ higher sprite limit should reduce flicker and slowdown.

If you’d like more details as to why these NES -> SNES ports are such a big deal, I already covered this in a previous post and discussed it during Weekly Roundup #361 at the 12min mark:  https://youtu.be/rviGb9gS_CA?t=721  While the previous post/podcast was talking about the developer Infidelity’s conversions, all of that still applies here:  You basically get the same exact game, just without some of the NES’ limitations.

Also, Rumbleminze recently updated his port of Blaster Master to v1.2, to add MSU-1 support, along with a few fixes and QoL features.  Check out the main post on that port for more info, and here’s the QOL changes:  https://www.retrorgb.com/blaster-master-nes-to-snes.html

  • You can press SELECT on the options screen to preview all the MSU-1 tracks and individually turn them off, if you prefer the 2A03 music.
  • The “X” button will act as if you pressed both Down and Y, which will fire your selected special weapon while in the tank.
  • The “R” button will mirror the NES “A” button (the SNES B button), which shoots grenades and jumps. This allows you to hold R to strafe in the overhead levels.
  • The “L” button will temporarily disable Wall.2 for the purposes of climbing down the corner of a wall. This allows you to more easily jump off ledges rather than accidently clinging to the wall and falling to your death.
