The Physics Nightmare and Bizarre Jumping of Strider (NES) – Behind the Code

NES Strider feels janky. We’ve known that since it was released. But how bad could it be? … Oh! Absolutely terrible!

Jumping, running into a wall, and falling – simple things in any other game seem to be half-baked in Strider. The physics are worse than you could possibly imagine.

Why do you slam your head into the ceiling multiple times when you jump? Why do you judder when running against a wall? Why is it so difficult to execute a Triangle Jump? Why do you sometimes stop in midair!?

This episode dives into the code of Strider and shows why things seem to be so broken. We’ll also fix a few bugs and make the Triangle Jump much easier to perform.

Enjoy!
