Krikzz has just released a completely open source version of his Genesis Everdrive, that’s also meant to be a cost-effective way for people to start gaming. I purchased one and the price came to just over $40, including shipping to the NYC area. These are obviously far less powerful than the Mega Everdrive Pro’s, but for that price, it’s absolutely worth it for people on a budget, or people who want a second ROM Cart for their Genesis / Mega Drive. The first and most important thing to know, is the goal of this was price and simplicity. In fact, the cartridge doesn’t have it’s own CPU or FPGA and is built in the old school style using only memory and discrete logic. That means no special chip support, no Sega CD emulation, no savestates and no instant loading. In fact, larger games can take a long time (guessing up to a minute) to load into memory, however once they’re loaded, they’ll launch immediately.
I’m excited to try mine and will do a short livestream once it arrives!
