The MPC-HC team has just released an update that adds compatibility for 120fps videos recorded with new iPhone’s. The reason this is important to RetroRGB readers, is many of us use MPC-HC as our dedicated PC video player; It’s compatibility with basically all file types and ability to run from a folder without installation are crucial features to many of us performing video capture and editing. If you purchased a new iPhone, you’d previously be forced to use multiple players to view files, so this is a really handy update. The software is free as always and please consider donating to the team, if you rely on it as much as I do:

In order to use MPC-HC, either run the .exe installer, or simply extract the zip file to a folder on your PC; I just have it in a “MPC” folder in the root of my C:\ drive. Then to make it your default player on Windows 11 (and I think 10 as well), right click on any video file you’d like associated, click “open with” and “Choose another app”. Then scroll down and click on “Choose an app on your PC”. Navigate to the MPC directory you created and double click on the .exe file. Then hit “always” when brought back to the previous menu. You can repeat the process with every video file type as needed.
So, why would you want to do this instead of installing and using the Windows default settings? You really don’t need to at all, however if you’re this far into the post, I assume you’re a fellow PC nerd who has similar trust issues. After decades of watching installed programs clutter multiple places on my hard drive and add countless random changes to the Windows Registry, I truly appreciate software that “just works”. MPC-HC has been my go-to player ever since I started getting serious about video capture and I don’t think I’ll be changing any time soon.
