A new Kickstarter project has been launched for a cartridge adapter that lets you play Duck Hunt on a flat-screen TV. The cost is $129 with delivery claiming to be February 2019, but people can get prototype kits right now for about $500. It works by first replacing the hardware inside the NES Zapper, then adding an adapter board inside the Duck Hunt cartridge.
I have mixed feelings about this project. While this is absolutely an amazing accomplishment and something many of us have wanted for a long time, it only works with Duck Hunt, is relatively expensive and will only be available for this kickstarter; No further units are being produced. Maybe they’ll consider selling the hardware and open-sourcing the software, so the community can patch all the NES light gun games to work? Not that would be a game-changer.
