Here’s an interview with Tom Happ, creator of the games Axiom Verge 1 & 2. Both are some of my favorite Metroidvania games and it was an honor to be able to interview the creator! We discussed a bit about his background and went in deep with some questions about the games – If you’re a fan of the series, or just want to hear from the perspective of an accomplished indie game developer, definitely give this a listen, available is a video (above), as well as audio-only on iTunes, Google, Stitcher, Spotify and many others as well as direct-download:

One point that I’ve made a few times about the Axiom Verge games, is it feels at home on all displays. While this is 100% preference, I’ve always felt that some games (or consoles) looked better on CRT’s, others on modern flat-panels and others on the lower resolution screens of handhelds. For some reason – at least to my eyes – I didn’t have a favorite screen and even enjoyed playing it on an OLED TV through the RT5x with CRT emulation scanlines running.
I would recommend playing on your favorite controller though. The Switch version gave you the choice of using either the d-pad or analog stick and I found myself only using the d-pad. I’m sure this is just muscle memory, as I played on a Super Nintendo-style Switch controller, which made it truly feel like a classic Metroidvania (affiliate link): https://amzn.to/2Z1BqqU
