Homebrew Mortal Kombat 2 3DO Port Public Beta Released

While there’s still a long way to go before it is feature complete (or should I say, komplete?) 3DO homebrew developer 3DO HD has dropped a public beta for their 3DO Mortal Kombat 2 port. Putting aside the missing bits for a moment, this is incredibly impressive work and it’s not hyperbole to say that this could be the best way to experience the game on a home console once it is finished. If you’d like to read more about this release, 3DO HD made a community post on YouTube about it that includes a description of what work is still left to do:

  • This is still very much a BETA. As of now the latest version is 5.01 as shown on the Start Menu screen. I will continue to drop fixes over the same link
  • The IP to Mortal Kombat is owned by MK / Netherrealm. This is a not-for-profit fan project for a 30 year old console that never received a port
  • There will be bugs. I will fix them as I find them
  • If you play with a CD there may be slight audio skips when backgrounds change in the intro and ending
  • There are NO fighter specific fatalities in this version
  • Shang Tsung can only morph into the opponent
  • Soon I will begin working on the “complete” version which will include fatalities, babalities, friendships, and Shang Tsung morphing into anyone

If you want to support 3DO HD’s work, they have a Ko-Fi page set up. I’d also recommend checking out their Tetris1&2 3DO ports, which are available on their GitHub page.
