Author: Rees

Hello, my name is Rees – from ctrl.alt.rees – and I’m a vintage computing and retro gaming enthusiast and electronics tinkerer from the UK. My interests are predominantly Atari stuff, 90s PC gaming (particularly early 3D) and electronics projects, but anything retro/tech is cool with me!

You may know me from my vintage computing and retro gaming YouTube channel – and you can also follow me on my website, Instagram, or Twitter!

My first gaming experience was at the tender age of 5, playing Keystone Kapers and Frogger on my cousin’s Atari 2600. From that fateful Christmas Day onward I was hooked, and moved on to the Atari ST with a brief detour via the Acorn Electron (until it exploded). We got our first PC – a 486 DX2/66 – in 1994, and I rediscovered retro and my love for all things Atari in the early 2000s when I finally got the chance to own my dream childhood console, the Jaguar.

I think it’s safe to say that I was an odd child.

I now have a pretty extensive collection of Atari computers and consoles as well as a few other interesting machines, with particular favourites being an upgraded IBM 5150 (the original MS-DOS PC) and a rare Japanese Atari 2800 as well as some very rare prototypes.

Celebrating The 30th Anniversary of id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D

Today is May 5th, 2022 – and 30 years ago today, id Software unleashed their second major release (after Commander Keen, of course) on an unsuspecting world, in the form of the Wolfenstein 3D shareware episode uploaded to the infamous Software Creations BBS, allegedly at 4AM after pulling an all-nighter squashing last minute bugs. Little […]

MiSTer MultiSystem / Heber Reveal Handheld MiSTer Prototype

The official MiSTer MultiSystem Twitter account has revealed that Richard Horne, owner of their hardware manufacturing partner Heber, has been working on a handheld MiSTer system and already has mutliple iterations of working prototypes. Richard informs me that the prototypes are currently built around a stripped down DE10 and so are 100% compatible with the […]

Fatal Racing / Whiplash S3 ViRGE OEM Release Found & Preserved

In this video I finally fulfil a dream that started way back in December of 2020. As a fresh-faced new YouTuber I was asked to be a part of that year’s DOScember, a yearly celebration of all things MS-DOS. I had a longer-term project in the works focussing on my IBM 5150 that would release […]

Retro PC hardware guru keropi – best known for the PC MIDI and Orpheus soundcards previously covered on RetroRGB, among many other awesome projects – has announced another upcoming ISA sound card. Built around the CMI8330 sound chip, which was commonly used for onboard audio and SoundBlaster clones in the mid-late 90s, the MK8330 will […]

Homebrew with the Sega Virtua Processor on the Sega Genesis

I was interested to come across this video by MatteusBeus – AKA Matthew Bennion – whose channel covers game development on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. In it he provides an excellent overview of the ongoing work of both Richard Kaussler and Javier de Silóniz Sandino (known in the community as Javi) towards reverse […]
