Tito from Macho Nacho Productions recently posted a video showing off the new GameCube version of the RetroGEM HDMI mod kit. This kit is compatible with all GC’s, including the DOL-101 version without the Digital Out port. Check it out for installation instructions, as well as to see it in action.

I really think almost everyone that owns a GameCube with a digital-out port would be better off just getting a plug & play HDMI solution like the Carby. If anything ever happens to your GC, you can just unplug it and plug it right into another one. Also, it’s cheaper than the RetroGEM and much cheaper if you consider paying for the software unlock and installation. And if you’re getting a modern scaler with HDMI input anyway, you’ll be able to scale to higher resolutions and have more options.
That said, if the only non-HDMI console you own is the GC and don’t plan on getting a scaler, you’ll definitely get better quality output from the GEM. And I know many people who’d always prefer a clean installation than use a dongle that sticks out the back. Overall, I’m just glad there seems to be choices for everyone these days!
