The Sony PDF Sorting Project continues on ConsoleMods.org!
What is it?
As a refresher of the first post a year and a half ago, we’ve scraped a ton of documents from multiple Sony websites from public Archive.org backups. These documents contain Sony memos that were sent out to distributors, and operation and service manuals for tons of their products. The first time around, only documents for professional monitors (BVM, PVM, SSM, and add-on cards) were uploaded and the community stepped up and labelled 1500 documents, all of which are available on the ConsoleMods Wiki.
This time, the focus is on everything else that is CRT related, including:
- Consumer TVs (KV, KW)
- Monitors (CPD, CVM, GDM, HDM, KX, PGM, PHM)
- Projectors and projector TVs (VPH, KD, KDP, KP, KPR)
- Remotes (RM)
- Black and white TVs (TV)
- Sony Watchmans (FD)
- and more (BKPF, HMD, PFV)
Totaling ~1400 new pages and ~5900 new documents!
How can I help?
While the documents are all sorted by model number and have a corresponding page in the wiki, the filenames themselves are all a spattering of random numbers or text strings taken from the document title, and you can’t tell what the document is until you open it. So, we are looking for help in labelling these documents.
If you are interested in helping, these are the steps to follow:
- Create a ConsoleMods.org account and login so you can edit the wiki.
- Open this page and click “Go” to visit a random page with unlabeled documents (alternatively, see the full list here).
- If any files in the table show as “(unknown)”, click the file’s link to go to the file’s info page, click the file again to see what the document is, then click “edit” on the info page and replace “(unknown)” with a short description, remove the “Unlabelled Documents” category tag, and save it.
Once a document has been labeled this way, it updates all pages where that document appears. If a document is completely unrelated to projectors, CRTs, or CRT accessories, feel free to change the “Category:Unlabelled Documents” to “Category:Delete” and it will be marked for deletion.
See this page for an example where all documents are labeled. Once all of the files on a page are labeled, you can remove the warning message asking for help labelling them.
Where can I get the full set?
All of these documents were originally grabbed from Archive.org links. These documents are now available on ConsoleMods.org under the CRT Wiki (shortlink: https://crt.wiki). The full unlabeled repo can be found at this Google Drive link and is also available on this Archive.org page.
Conclusion
We hope you find some use in these documents to restore, repair, or learn more about your old Sony CRT or accessories. Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if you want to add any further information for your set on the CRT Wiki or upload a picture of your CRT as many of the pages don’t have an image.
