I just came across a project called the ZX Spectrum Next – A modern rebuild of the original console that includes RGB and HDMI outputs and is compatible with original software and hardware. It looks like it uses a combination of the original chips (Z80, etc), as well as an FPGA. I don’t know much about the ZX Spectrum or this project, so I think it’s best I just link to the site and let you see for yourself. Maybe someday I can interview the creators and learn more:
