Nintendo “Classic” Consoles Discontinued

The Hollywood Reporter has just posted an interview with Nintendo of America President Reggie and some interesting statements were made.  One announcement relevant to retro-gamers is that Nintendo will be discontinuing their “Classic” consoles, saying:

…these products are going to be available through the holiday season and once they sell out, they’re gone. And that’s it.

Nintendo’s only replacement for these games is the Switch Online subscription:

the way that consumers will be able to continue participating with our classic content is going to be through Nintendo Switch Online…
We look at that as the main way that consumers will be able to experience that legacy content.

That means essentially people can no longer “purchase” these games, but “rent” them during the Switch only subscription.  That wouldn’t be too bad, considering it’s a very affordable service, hover the NES games can only be played offline for one week before an online check-in is required to retain access.  I guess people on family vacations will be scrambling to log into wifi wherever possible…

One other thing that really struck me about the interview was Reggie’s uncanny ability to not actually answer a question, while making a reporter think he did.  Things like that always give me a “big brother” evil vibe, but read the article and see for yourself.  My favorite is when he was asked if Nintendo monitors gameplay…
