Hyperkin RetroN GX: DON’T BUY

Both Joe from GameSack and Metal Jesus have posted reviews of the Hyperkin RetroN GX clone console that plays TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine HU Cards.  Both went over everything you’d need to know about it…which should be all you need to know NOT to buy it.

While the 1-4 frames of input lag isn’t nearly the worst I’ve ever seen, the stuttery video is the worst I’ve even seen in a software emulation box like this.  Also, the audio lag is so bad, it doesn’t even need to be slowed down to hear the difference: Simply having them play at the same time like in MJ’s video clearly showed how bad it is.  Also, both reviewers had issues with HU Card compatibility and since this isn’t compatible with Everdrives, that means you’ll be spending $90 to have a terrible experience on whatever random games are compatible.  I don’t think there’s any chance Hyperkin could fix this before it hits customers in May, so don’t expect a miracle firmware update.

I realize the Analogue Duo is two and a half times the price of this, but you really get what you pay for with that one.  I’d strongly recommend just saving your money and waiting till you can pick up the Duo…or just using emulation any way that’s NOT the GX.
