SMB1 NES to SNES + “Mario Maker”

Developer Infidelity recently released his latest NES to SNES conversion, for the original Super Mario Bros. game.  As with his previous conversions, these eliminate slowdown, reduce sprite flicker and allow for SNES-related enhancements that aren’t possible on NES hardware.  Along with this release, came a second version…and this one allows you to modify the game “Super Mario Maker” style!  This (as with all his other releases) are freely available to download, however please consider supporting on Patreon, to fund further conversions!  More info below:

First, it’s worth noting that Super Mario Bros. Maker will only work via software emulation, or real hardware and a ROM cart.  Due to the way MiSTer addresses memory, it won’t be able to use this ROM.  We actually discussed it towards the end of our RWX panel.

As for the port, the only changes to the game are sound effects-related.  To get around this, Infidelity took .wav’s from the NES’ 2A03 and converted them to.brr sample files for the SNES’ SPC700.  The effects converted were as follows:

  • brick smash
  • head hitting solid object
  • enemy squished
  • shell kicked
  • fireball
  • sliding down flagpole

The default color palette for both games is FCEUX, however there’s a folder in the “Maker” zip called “cgram patches” containing 18 total palettes that can be applied to both roms.  I’ve personally found Kitrinx34 and Digital Prime (FBX) to be the best overall, but if you have a preference, just use any ips patcher to swap to your favorite one.
