It’s really hard to find a good power supply for classic consoles and unfortunately, most PSU’s labeled “for retro gaming” are absolute junk that you should never use with your consoles. A few years ago, Ste from HD Retrovision decided to approach the problem a different way: Instead of looking for “retro gaming” PSU’s, why not find a reputable modern version and just use pigtail’s to adapt the ends to each console?
Throughout this search, one model PSU was found to perform equal to, or better than the originals and was even verified by the MD Fourier team! Rondo Products has decided to stock both this PSU and the pigtail adapters required to adapter them to most consoles! While it seems a bit confusing at first, it’s as simple as this: For most consoles, you’ll need one PSU and one pigtail adapter. Also, that combination can be used on multiple consoles. FirebrandX has also just completed a page on his website, that’s a culmination of his original work on the Shmups thread. FBX chose a slightly different way to solve the same problem, listing different model PSU’s, reducing the amount of adapters people might need. While I like how Rondo Products has simplified everything with one PSU, the more nerdier of us might want to check out FBX’s list. He’s also got international versions available as well for people needing PSU’s outside the US. Just make sure to label each PSU very clearly!!! There is one downside to using current-generation power supplies: What if the manufacturer changes the design of the PSU? That’s what happened with the ‘PWR+’ model previously recommended – The original model Ste tested and verified was discontinued and the replacement is not recommended at all. That’s why I’d generally recommend buying from Rondo Products, as they’re stocking verified part numbers and will check with each bulk order that the design hasn’t changed.
