Thanks to developer IQ_132, Neo Geo CD owners now have two new ports of classic MVS only titles playable on their CD console.
Like many titles on the platform, Neo Bomberman is a one or two player co-op title where players place bombs around a maze in an attempt to become the last man standing. There is a campaign mode with bosses and a vs. game where players can battle up to three computer controlled opponents.
Very little was changed in the conversion process and as in many of these ports, there is only one load. As in many later Neo titles, there is some slowdown when things get hectic, but this is present in the MVS version as well.
Things of note:
- Only a few sounds were shortened, everything should be there.
- No loads after the initial load.
- Soft dips can cause issues, don’t touch/create them.
Captain Tomaday was originally an MVS only release by Visco. AES and Dreamcast versions were recently released and are currently available for purchase through Pixelheart.
Captain Tomaday is a cute-em-up that doubles as a bullet hell shooter. This one does feature quite a bit of slowdown when the screen fills up with sprites, which is faithful to its MVS release. Per IQ_132’s notes, there are no noticeable cuts to the game, very short load times between stages and the one glitch can be resolved via a reload.
- There should be no noticeable cuts with very short loads between stages.
- I have added a Soft Dip for infinite lives.
- Note that if you set the soft dips, the music will stop playing. You’ll have to back out of the game and re-load it, but it will respect the dips after that.Download the build package here.
Links to IQ_132’s build scripts are linked above. No ROMS are provided, you will need to provide those yourself. Once converted, the ISO files can be burned on a regular CD or can be transferred to the Neo Geo CD SD Loader.
As always, if you are interested in supporting devs who perform this type of work, IQ_132’s patreon page can be found here. The page also goes into great detail about how these conversions were achieved. It’s great info for any developers who might be interested in creating their own ports and conversions as well as for those who are just technically curious.
