Earthion – Steam Version GameSack Review

Joe from GameSack just posted a review of the awesome new game Earthion.  The game was made by Ancient and includes a soundtrack composed by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro.  It was created as a “modern Sega Genesis game”, however it’s currently only available on Steam; You can pre-order physical versions for all modern consoles (link below), or just wait until the digital version is released in September.  The game will also be available as a Sega Genesis cartridge in 2026.  Overall, it seemed like Joe (and basically everyone else) loved the game and said the emulation felt great – Remember that since this was made as a Genesis game, all modern versions run through Genesis emulation.  More info below the links:

As a note, the Steam version comes with the Genesis ROM and if you have the ability to decrypt it, you can use it on MiSTer and higher end ROM Carts like the Mega Everdrive Pro. and Mega SD.  I also tried it on the much cheaper OpenED and the game wouldn’t launch – I believe the ROM size is simply too big for less-powerful Genesis ROM Carts to handle.
EDIT 08/03: Yuzo Koshiro just posted on social media about a hacked version circulating.  I have some strong feelings about this, the strongest being that if you want projects like this to continue, you should NEVER steal a hacked ROM.  It really does ruin it for everyone.  And if you profit in any way from a stolen game, you should be treated like ANY thief.

…that said, if you purchased the Steam version and also downloaded the ROM to play on your Genesis ROM cart, are you actually stealing?  My strong personal feeling is no, since you paid for the game.  One grey area of opinion is the upcoming cartridge version – What if you plan on buying that, but steal the ROM now?  If you actually buy the physical copy, my (at least current) opinion is that’s fine as well.  And you can always help spread the word about the Steam and modern versions as you wait for the cart to go on sale.  I think a serious concern is people who steal the ROM, then kinda forget about buying the physical game; That could translate to a lot of sales lost.  If LRG simply opened pre-orders on the cartridge now, that risk could be mitigated, but I think there’s logistical reasons why that can’t happen.  So it’s your choice how you handle this, but I’m very proud to say I’m happy to support this game and others like it!

I had a chance to play the game early a few months ago and while I don’t have nearly as much time with it as Joe did, I completely agree – Everything about it is just perfect.  Absolute top-tier Genesis 16-bit graphics, an awesome soundtrack and really just a “new classic” shooter!  It stinks the Genesis cartridge version isn’t available yet, but I totally understand that the team wants to wait to make sure there aren’t any changes needed to the ROM before having the cartridges made.  We’ll absolutely post the moment it goes up for pre-order though!
