Tito from Macho Nacho Productions recently released a video showcasing a Nintendo 64 analog stick replacement called Project Renaissance, created by Rocker Gaming and ALinkToTao. This aims to be a high-end replacement that performs equal to or better than the original, as well as being more durable, adjustable and customizable. It’s currently out of stock, but seems like the best quality option for people with a big budget. And if you buy that, maybe consider getting the carrying case too, to protect your investment? My thoughts and more info after the links:

Obviously the first thing I need to talk about is price and as always, context is key: If you’re a casual N64 gamer with either an original controller that’s “good enough”, or you don’t mind using 3rd party controllers, this isn’t for you. While I respect what the N64 accomplished, it’s not my favorite console and I’ll stick with using the Brawler64 via the MiSTer’s core when I want to play Mario Kart 64 (pro players are yelling at their screen while reading that ;p).
That said, if you’re a speed runner, competitive Smash player, or pro gamer, this replacement will actually save you money over time – People who clock a lot of hardcore hours on the N64 need to replace the analog stick on a regular basis and that often means trying lots of new alternatives, or just trying to hunt down new-old-stock controllers. For those people, buying this might pay for itself within a year or two, all while having an accurate, tunable solution that has the potential to be better than the original.
Also, N64 fans who work hard and can afford to spend the extra money might just want to buy this so they never have to think about it again. I imagine this metal stick would last as long as the controller itself for anyone who’s not a pro-level gamer, with only the occasional re-greasing or re-tuning required every couple of years. But I’ll leave that decision to you – Either way, I always appreciate the craftmanship that goes into something like this and enjoy Tito’s presentation of it.
