Voultar’s Edge Enhancer Mod For The Super Nintendo

I had the opportunity to take an early look at Voultar’s Edge Enhancer mod for 2-chip Super Nintendos, which promises a sharper and cleaner video output comparable to 1-Chip Super Nintendo consoles.

First, it’s important to note that the mod will initially be offered as an install service only. Voultar is refining the installation documentation to ensure it covers all revisions of 2-Chip consoles thoroughly. Once the documentation is complete, DIY kits will be available for sale. This clarification is necessary, as there was some confusion about the availability of DIY kits.

Anyway, in the video, I demonstrate how the kit is installed into my SHVC-CPU-01 revision 2-Chip Super Nintendo. The kit is elegantly designed, featuring a custom interposer that streamlines the installation process, eliminating the need to solder many individual wires. However, the installation does require the removal of some small SMD components, making it moderately challenging. I recommend that novice modders consider having Voultar perform the installation.

Now like I mentioned earlier, this kit enhances the video output quality of all 2-chip SNES consoles. To better understand the differences between 2-chip and 1-chip SNES consoles, I strongly recommend watching Bob’s (RetroRGB) video covering the topic:

Additionally, the folks over at My Life In Gaming did an excellent deep dive into the Edge Enhancer mod and how it compares to many revisions of the Super Nintendo, so you should definitely check that out also!  And there’s a great article here on RetroRGB that goes over the Edge Enhancer as well.

Overall, I have to say this is a very exciting mod as it gives all of us 2-chip SNES owners 1-chip level video output.  It’s been many years in the making, but it will be worth the wait!
