Last year Atari released the 2600+ console – a modern day reimagining of their classic Video Computer System from 1977 (later known as the 2600). The new console adds modern conveniences like HDMI and USB-C power and uses software emulation and a clever mapper / dumper setup to dump and play games from original 2600 and 7800 cartridges, with Atari also re-releasing many classic games as well as some modern offerings that also run on the original hardware.
Alongside the 2600+, Atari also released an updated CX-40+ joystick and CX-30+ paddles. All of the new hardware received praise from reviewers for its high build quality and authenticity.
Fast forward to 2024 and Atari has once more repeated this act with the 7800 – a lesser-known console from 1986. The updated 7800+ uses the same internals as last year’s 2600+ with an updated outer shell to match the retro-futurist black plastic and brushed metal styling of the later console.
Atari is also offering an updated wireless version of the classic CX-78 two button gamepad, something that was sorely missing from the original 2600+ release and a requirement for some 7800 games. The controller features USB and DE-9 dongles for use with modern and original hardware and internal rechargeable batteries.
Initial impressions of the 7800+ and CX-78+ have again been very positive, with reviewers once more praising the build quality and accuracy of Atari’s latest offerings. Of course, with the 7800 being far less well known and loved, it remains to be seen whether the new 7800+ will be a hit as far as sales are concerned, but I’m willing to bet that the CX-78+ controllers will prove to be popular, particularly among owners of the 2600+.
