Exactly one year in the making, today I proudly announce our English translation patch release for “Capcom vs. SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001” on the SEGA Dreamcast! What started as a simple “can I port over the PS2 assets?” exercise turned into a full-blown, highly polished patch of which I am very proud.
Firstly, no official Western localization ever saw the ~5,100 post-win quotes fully translated. Instead, we got about a seventh of the original text, but heavily watered down (to put it nicely). After a match is over, these pieces of dialogue are heavily customized based on who is speaking, the defeated opponent to whom they’re speaking, or the teammate to whom they’re speaking. Now, English-speaking players can finally enjoy all of the rich, hilarious, and character-accurate taunts and back-and-forth exchanges for the very first time. A real treat! As an important note, please consult the GitHub README for details on how and when these win quotes are triggered!
In addition to this never-before-translated part of the game, all other forms of text have been fully translated based on the official PlayStation 2 release. This includes the special move command list, as well as end-game cutscene text. However, all of this text has been fixed, cleaned-up, and even retranslated in numerous cases! I don’t mean to disparage or insult all of the folks who produced the official Western localization all those years ago (and certainly under time/budget constraints), but it was honestly pretty shocking to us how poor some of the original translations were.
We didn’t stop there, though! The now-defunct “Network Mode” has been replaced with “Bonus Mode”. This brand-new feature serves up some pretty cool content to players, like a 100% unlocked save, an English-subtitled Japanese TV commercial, and perhaps most awesome of all, a collection of interviews from the October 15th, 2001 “Another Play Guide”, translated by Benjamin Roodberg, featuring producers, graphic artists, sound engineers, planners, and programmers.
When all is said and done, our hope is that this patch serves as the absolute definitive way to enjoy “Capcom vs. SNK 2” at home. Given that the Dreamcast port is arcade-perfect (for all intents and purposes), and given that this patch now unlocks a huge piece of previously untranslated game content, we’re pretty confident it’ll quickly be adopted by fans as the de facto way to play!
