Two talented modders, Joseph Tompkins and Jonas from RetroGame.Evo, have created an exciting new mod for the Game Boy Advance SP, transforming it into a handheld that resembles the aesthetic of the Panic Playdate. Joseph was enamored by the Playdate’s design and wanted to infuse its charm into the GBA SP. The result? The innovative gachaSP.
This unique build features a custom 3D-printable front shell and mid-frame as well as a button relocation PCB, all available through PCBWay. By combining these custom components with the SP’s original motherboard, rear shell, and an aftermarket IPS screen kit, the gachaSP emerges as a compact, sleek, and completely distinct take on the Game Boy Advance.
While this new form factor may not offer the most ergonomic button layout due to its compact design, it remains very much playable, maintaining the core experience of the GBA SP.
For my own build, I utilized a custom-designed ribbon cable that significantly simplified the assembly process. Created by Bob Wulff from the YouTube channel WulffDen, this flex ribbon cable streamlines the connection between the button board and the motherboard, and I consider it an essential component for anyone attempting this mod.
In the end, the gachaSP is a delightful project that delivers a Game Boy Advance design, one that Nintendo never delivered!
