Greg from LaserBear is now selling his version of the “WavePhoenix” – An open-source, homebrew version of the receiver for the GameCube WaveBird controllers, created by developer James Smith. It’s compatible with all original WaveBird controllers, making this the perfect replacement for anyone who’s lost their receiver. It’s also compatible with any firmware updates James may post and will ship with version 0.9.0 pre-installed. The price is $25 and it’s in-stock right now:

This is a really cool project, as WaveBird receivers are becoming harder to find and more expensive – Certainly more expensive than what Greg is charging! And they’re even a bit smaller than the original, as pictured above.
Functionality is the same, however instead of mimicking the original WaveBird’s channel wheel, this has a pairing button: Press to sync and wait for the LED to start blinking. Then hold X + Y on the WaveBird controller and wait for the LED to stop blinking and stay lit. Everything else should be the same as the original.
Also, if you’d like more info on the project, definitely check out James’ github page – He goes over the development process, protocols and the Wireless Gecko SoCs used to make!
