MiSTer MultiSystem 2 – The First Hands-On Review

Previously on RetroRGB we reported on the imminent availability of Heber’s MiSTer MultiSystem 2 console.

The follow-up to 2021’s highly regarded MiSTer MultiSystem, this new generation of MiSTer hardware takes a departure from other stack-based and even consolised implementations by offering a fully integrated solution, with the Cyclone FPGA chip mounted directly to the console’s custom PCB rather than relying on users obtaining a separate DE10-Nano development board and building the system themselves.

Heber is offering a lower-cost “Digital” edition with basic HDMI and USB connectivity, and a beefed-up “Analogue” version with support for existing SNAC adapters, Heber’s own range of proprietary expansion cartridges, NFC via Zaparoo, additional I/O capabilities, and analogue video outputs via the defacto standard Genesis / Mega Drive 2 connector, as well as other connectivity.

Retro hardware repair wizard Lee from the YouTube channel More Fun Making It is the first out of the gate with an independent hands-on review, and based on his impressions the hardware seems to be everything we’ve come to expect from Heber, and another excellent option for those looking to get into the wonderful world of FPGA retro gaming.

Designed and manufactued in-house in the UK, the MultiSystem 2 is available for pre-order from Heber’s shop and will begin shipping in August.
